about

A Poorly Written Story proves to be an exceptional storyteller on the jagged edged garage rock “Camp Eerie”. The pure adrenaline that runs through the album is highly addictive. Hooks aplenty the way they rush through the run time is a pure joy. Everything about it embodies pure chaos. Drums are brought to their breaking point. Guitar riffs race through as they incorporate elements of punk’s speed, garage rock’s messy style, all within a strange infectious quality. Vocals rise above this din in a spirit of defiance. Lyrics show a true knack for creating weird yet wonderful narratives. Character studies, the surrealness of it all, further adds to the allure of the album.
Their acid-fried garage punk fusion is a true thing of beauty. In terms of the sheer unhinged quality of it all they occasionally touch upon 80s-era Butthole Surfers in terms of pure unbridled glee. Storytelling incorporates elements of darker impulses at times going into Acid Scratch territory. Akin to that group, the great levels of noise and distortion feel visceral. Physical music for certain, A Poorly Written Story confronts the listener with the wild, at times cacophonous, energy.
Not a moment is wasted for they dive headfirst into the mix on the potent opener “Lake Fright”. Setting the tone for what follows, the song features distinctive guitar work and nimble patterns. The urgency increases dramatically on the album highlight, the potent power of “What I Want” where they bring the tempo to the breaking point. Vocals are shouted with so much gusto. The tribal drums introduce the ceremonial “Even Me Out”. Poppy influences emerge on the surprisingly tender “After All” which features a wonderful shaggy dog quality. On “They Are Coming For Us” goes for a hint of the dramatic. With “Turning Into Dust” things evolve quite nicely in a communal presence. “You Look So Skinny” chooses an angular tact recalling Harlem at their best. Distortion rides through on the playful “Dead On The Inside”. A great kaleidoscopic stream of color blurs through on “Two Sided”. Incorporating a funky rhythm “Halloween Massacre” closes things off with another album highlight.
“Camp Eerie” shows off A Poorly Written Story’s impeccable ability to create a world that feels uniquely their own.
